"The reason my voice is sounding more passionate
is because I'm singing directly from the heart." Sammy Hagar
Singer, Songwriter, Performer, Artist
April Grisman's career as an artist was shaped by her upbringing. Her parents, artist Pat Ryan and singer Cyretta Ryan, nurtured her interest in singing and performing, allowing her to freely explore her interests and develop her talents.
Exposed from an early age to every genre of music available: jazz, rock, pop, funk, soul, blues, R&B, reggae, classical and more, April's education in music appreciation, her extraordinary exposure to a wide variety of singers and musicians and natural talent all combined to set her on her evolutionary path as a singer, songwriter and performer.
"I bring my love of music, performing, production and the relationship between the band and the singers to everything I do. When I'm working with a band or other singers, there's this certain moment when we all reach the same place at the same time - and it's magic."
April's passion for music and performing was clear from the beginning. In addition to professional dance troupes and theater, April began singing at a very young age. April remembers putting on impromptu "shows" with her sisters, Amber and Claire, for the bands that were frequently guests of her parents. Her first professional performance was at age 12 as a back up singer for Smoke, Inc at The Sleeping Lady in Fairfax, California.
April began writing and performing original songs in high school. She wrote and collaborated on original material for bands like Original Funktion and Funk Stew. She continues to write original material and collaborate on songs with professional performing artists and bands.
April continues to keep music in the family. Married to musician and producer, Monroe Grisman, son of famed American Bluegrass/Newgrass musician, David Grisman, April performs with her husband and father-in-law, as well as with her sister, Amber Morris, in professional events and impromptu gatherings.
Today, along with fronting The 85's, a Marin County-based dance party band, April performs with local area professional musicians and bands like Petty Theft and Vintage City, as a lead singer, back up vocalist, and session artist.
For the love of the music
"I wasn't thinking about or planning a career as a singer, or even in music. It was just a natural progression. Even after I started, I wasn't on the 'star' path - I loved the production end. I've gone through a tremendous evolution to become a well-rounded musician. When I stopped worrying about the mechanics and allowed myself to go outside of myself and just sing, I knew what I was destined to do."
"One of the biggest thrills of my career so far has been when my sister Amber and I had the opportunity to spend the day in a recording studio singing backups for The Wailers. It was an amazing experience. Absolutely huge!"
